Xiaomi to launch 'Desh Ka Smartphone' in India on November 30

November 24, 2017 0

The upcoming Xiaomi smartphone will be part of its Redmi series.

Xiaomi smartphone launch India

Xiaomi’s presence in India is widely known with the country being the company’s most favorable market. Continuing its domination, Xiaomi has recently started investing heavily in the government’s ‘Make in India’ program. As part of its efforts, Xiaomi has now announced a new Redmi smartphone launch in India. Xiaomi’s next product will be “Desh Ka Smartphone” and will launch on November 30.
Xiaomi’s teaser doesn’t mention anything but going by the India-centric theme, it’s quite possible that the smartphone will fall in the budget category. At present, 95 percent of Xiaomi’s smartphones sold in India are assembled locally. This year, Xiaomi launched two budget smartphones in India – Redmi 4A and Redmi 4. The Redmi 4A is priced at Rs 5,999 for the 16GB variant, and Rs 6,999 for the 32GB model. The Redmi 4 also comes in two storage options of 3GB RAM plus 32GB storage priced at Rs 8,999, and 4GB RAM plus 64GB storage which retails at Rs 10,999.
Xiaomi recently announced its third manufacturing unit in India which is also the company’s first non-smartphone unit. With this, Xiaomi also launched its ‘Make in India’ power bank, the Mi Power Bank 2i. Offered in two models of 10,000mAh and 20,000mAh models, the Mi Power Bank 2i is priced at Rs 799 and Rs 1,499 respectively.
Xiaomi also launched its Mi Exchange Program in India. Now you can exchange your old Xiaomi smartphone for a new one at Mi Home Stores. The exchange rate for your smartphone can be checked on Cashify’s app and website, the company Xiaomi has collaborated with for the program.
Coming to the upcoming Xiaomi smartphone, the company is tight lipped about the details. With the launch just next week, it won’t be long till we get to know what Xiaomi has in store for the Indian market. Currently, the Redmi Note 5 is doing rounds in the rumor mill. The Redmi Note 5 would succeed the Redmi Note 4 which is interestingly Xiaomi’s highest selling smartphone in India.

Xiaomi Mi 7 specifications, price surface online; here’s what we know so far

November 24, 2017 0

The Mi 7 is expected to come with Snapdragon 845 SoC under the hood.

xiaomi redmi y1 logo

The Xiaomi Mi 6 was launched earlier this year, and with the year coming to an end, rumors about next year’s flagship device, the Mi 7 have already started surfacing online. Now, a few details including the price and specifications of the Mi 7 has surfaced online hinting at what next year’s flagship device could look like.
Spotted by Gizmochina, the Mi 7 is expected to follow the on-going trend in the market and ship with thinner bezels and full-screen when compared to this year’s Mi 6.
In terms of specifications, the Xiaomi Mi 7 will feature a 6.01-inch OLED display that is said to be supplied by Samsung. Under the hood, the device might be powered by a Snapdragon 845 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM. Here it is worth noting that Qualcomm is yet to announce its flagship chipset, the Snapdragon as yet. However, considering Xiaomi uses flagship chipset in their flagship phone, this might actually stand true. A recent rumor hinted that Xiaomi and Qualcomm are currently working to optimize the upcoming Snapdragon 845 SoC for the Xiaomi Mi 7.
On the camera front, the Mi 7 is expected to sport dual-rear camera with a f/1.7 aperture. We still don’t have clarity on the camera resolution though. The might also be a 16-megapixel front-facing camera. The smartphone, in terms of design, is said to be made out metal and glass to add to the premium look and feel of the phone. Previous rumors also suggested that the Xiaomi Mi 7 will likely support Qi standard wireless charging as Xiaomi recently joined the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC).
In terms of pricing, the Xiaomi Mi 7 is expected to retail at a price starting 2,699 RMB (Rs 26,500 approximately) in China. If rumors are to be believed, the Xiaomi Mi 7 is expected to launch in the first quarter or early second quarter of 2018.
To recap, the Xiaomi Mi 6 sports a 5.15-inch display, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC. For photography, there is a dual-camera setup at the back that includes a pair of 12-megapixel snappers — one wide-angle lens and one telephoto lens capable of 2X lossless zoom. On the front, there is an 8-megapixel camera for selfies. Xiaomi did not launch the Mi 6 in India claiming that the flagship device is too expensive to launch in the Indian market.

Xiaomi Mi Exchange: How to exchange your old device for a new Xiaomi smartphone

November 23, 2017 0

You can upgrade to a new Xiaomi phone by exchanging the older model with this program.

xiaomi-redmi-note-4-logo

Xiaomi has introduced a new exchange program for its devices, under which users will be able to exchange their existing units with new Xiaomi smartphones. The company has tied up with Delhi-based Cashify for the Mi Exchange program.
Under the Mi Exchange program, if you are a Xiaomi user, you can visit a nearby Mi Home store, and buy a new Xiaomi phone in return. The exchange value will be determined by the Cashify team. The value of exchange will be offered as a discount for the new Xiaomi model.
As Gadgets360 notes, the resale value of the handset in exchange will be based on the Cashify app. So for example, if you are purchasing the newer Xiaomi Mi A1 in exchange for the Redmi 3S Prime, you can simply check the exchange amount preview of the older device by visiting the Cashify site.
In addition to that, if you do not want to visit the Mi Home store, Cashify can also arrange for a pickup service of the older device right from the phone’s location. However, availing this benefit will require you to pay the complete amount for the new purchase at the Mi Home store, and the exchange discount will be credited to you at a later stage.
One must note that the exchange value will be determined on the basis of the condition of the device and market value, as is the guideline for most exchange programs. Further, only one device can be exchanged with an available Xiaomi smartphone at Mi Home, and the model being exchanged should be listed in Cashify’s portfolio. You can read more about the terms here.
The program is Xiaomi’s latest initiative to keep the Indian consumers hooked to its affordable yet feature-rich product portfolio. This week, the company announced its third manufacturing plant in India, which is also its first unit for non-smartphone category. Unlike the other two, this is dedicated to the production of powerbanks.
As per latest IDC estimates, Xiaomi is currently the number one brand in the smartphone category in India, and shares the top spot with Samsung. For a three-year-old company, achieving the leading position in a dynamic market like India is no less than a feat. The company now aims to increase its Make in Indiacommitment to ensuring products are locally manufactured through an increase in manufacturing capacities.

Xiaomi Mi Power Bank 2i

Xiaomi India teased a new product launch recently. Most guesses hinted at a smartphone. Instead, Xiaomi actually launched a new Mi Power Bank 2i in India today. The Mi Power Bank 2i will go on sale on November 23 at 12:00PM exclusively via Mi.com and through its offline Mi Home stores.
Xiaomi’s recent teaser included just the letter “i” preceded with the tricolor. The “i” here stands for the Mi Power Bank 2i and the tricolor represents the company’s “Make in India” initiative. The Mi Power Bank 2i is manufactured at Xiaomi’s new manufacturing facility in Noida. It is also Xiaomi’s first accessory made in India. The Mi Power Bank 2i is available in two color options of black and white and measures 149.5 x 69.6 x 23.9mm.

When only a single port is used for charging, the Mi Power Bank 2i will initiate Quick Charge 3.0, provided it is supported by the smartphone. When the dual-USB output is used, the Mi Power Bank 2i is said to adjust power output according to the device capacity.
Xiaomi says that with two devices charging, one can expect up to 5.1V/3.6A dual output. It is also optimized for low power charging of devices like Bluetooth headsets and fitness bands. You can double press the power button to start 2-hour low power charging on the Mi Power Bank 2i.
The 10,000mAh Mi Power Bank 2i also comes with dual-USB output, but it doesn’t support Quick Charge 3.0. This model is also equipped with low-power charging mode. Xiaomi extends ‘Make in India’ commitment with its first-ever non-smartphone manufacturing plant

November 23, 2017 0

The manufacturing plant in partnership with Noida-based Hipad Technology is a dedicated facility for powerbanks.

xiaomi-china-stock-image

It was three years ago that China-based Xiaomi entered the Indian smartphone market, and took it by storm with its affordable products. The company recently bagged the top smartphone maker position (along with Samsung) in the country, and attributes a significant chunk of its success to not only balancing features and price right, but also to its commitment to the Make in India initiative by the government.
In continuation of the initiative, Xiaomi today announced its third manufacturing plant in India. The plant is also the company’s first non-smartphone unit, and currently assembles powerbanks. “The most searched brand for power banks is Xiaomi,” claims Manu Jain, Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director, Xiaomi India, who addressed the media during an industrial tour of the new manufacturing unit in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

New ‘Make in India’ Powerbank series

“Xiaomi India has seen exponential growth in India and today it enjoys market leadership in the smartphone segment. I believe a key reason for our success in the smartphone segment has been our commitment to India,” Jain said. Currently, 95 percent of Xiaomi’s smartphones sold in India are assembled locally.
Jain further added, “We spoke to the team at Hipad Technology a year back, and encouraged them to look at the Indian market to set up a Power Bank facility. Hipad is our partner in China for power banks and their constant support has helped Xiaomi become the most popular power bank brand in the world. We thought with the growing market size of power banks in India, it is important that we bring our manufacturing partners to India to provide Mi Fans a truly localized product and extend our commitment to Make in India.”

The company recently teased a new product through social media, and today it took the wraps off a new line of Xiaomi powerbanks. It introduced the Xiaomi Mi Powerbank 2i (‘i’ referring to designed and made in India). The powerbank is available in two capacities – 10,000mAh priced at Rs 799, and 20,000mAh priced at Rs 1,499. As Jain says, these have been designed, and priced based on the feedback of Mi fans community.
Both models support dual-USB output, and feature aluminum metal casing with a double anodized surface. Unlike regular powerbanks that feature a couple of A4 size batteries, the Mi Powerbank 2i comes with lithium polymer batteries, encased in a 14.2mm slim form factor.

First non-smartphone manufacturing plant

Talking about the new manufacturing unit, Jain said that the facility is spread over 2.3 lakh square feet with a starting production capacity of seven powerbanks per minute. This facility is in addition to two smartphone manufacturing units in Andhra Pradesh. BGR India visited the facility on Xiaomi’s invitation, and observed how the company puts something like a powerbank undergo nine levels of product testing, and three layers of process inspection at each stage.

At the raw material/ component stage, the company does random sampling, and tests them for quality. If there are discrepancies, the entire batch is rejected. Even before the final product is packaged, sampling is done to ensure there are no quality issues.

Spotting counterfeit Xiaomi Powerbank

Interestingly, when Jain talked about Xiaomi being the top-most brand which people search for online when it comes to powerbanks, he also revealed that the second-most popular brand is possibly ‘Fake Xiaomi’. Given the visible similarities between the genuine and knockoff powerbanks, people are often duped into paying for the counterfeit models.

However, Jain described an easy way to distinguish between a genuine and counterfeit Xiaomi powerbank. All that you need to do is look for the special Xiaomi hologram on the outer packaging. Upon scratching the hologram, you can see a code which can be cross-checked for authenticity at Xiaomi’s website. If you do end up purchasing a fake Xiaomi powerbank, you could immediately bring it to the company’s notice. While this is a very small feature, having a similar checkpoint for other products in the Xiaomi portfolio might help curb counterfeiting menace in the industry. Without confirming if such holograms will also extend to other products, Jain did say that while there is no plan right now, the company may look at incorporating the basic yet useful feature like hologram to identify genuine Xiaomi products.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 listed online with 5.99-inch full HD display ahead of launch

November 21, 2017 0

Xiaomi India had teased a smartphone launch earlier, which is expected to be the Redmi Note 5.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Oppomart
A new Xiaomi smartphone launch is approaching, and it could be the Redmi Note 5. Successor to the popular Redmi Note 4, this upcoming smartphone has been leaked numerous times, and even spotted on retailer website JD.com. While we are still waiting for an official launch, the smartphone has yet again been spotted on another retailer website.
The Redmi Note 5 spotted on Oppomart (via SlashLeaks) sports a large display as rumored, but is slightly different than its past leaked renders. There are almost no bezels on the sides with very thin ones on top and bottom. Like other Redmi smartphones, the bottom bezel houses the three capacitive touch buttons. At the rear there’s a single camera with LED flash, and the fingerprint sensor below. There are two very visible antenna lines running along the top and bottom.
In line with previous leaks, the Redmi Note 5 is seen sporting a dual-camera setup at the back. Surprisingly that is not the case with this listing. Moving on, the listing also reveals alleged specifications of the smartphone. The Redmi Note 5 is said to feature a 5.99-inch full HD display, Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor, and is likely to come in two variants – 32GB storage with 3GB RAM, and 64GB storage with 4GB RAM.
For photography, the Redmi Note 5 is said to sport a 12-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front camera. Its connectivity options include dual-SIM support, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. On the software front, the smartphone runs on Android 7.1 Nougat-based MIUI 9. The Redmi Note 5 will be fueled by a 4,000mAh battery.
While most of the specifications do match with past reports, there are some differences though. Some reports suggest that the Redmi Note 5 will be powered by a Snapdragon 636 SoC instead, and feature a dual-camera of 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors.

Chinese smartphone player Xiaomi has become the fifth largest smartphone brand in Russia during Q3 2017, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service.
“Xiaomi grew by 325 percent YoY and was the fastest growing smartphone brand in Russia in both online as well as offline sales,” the Associate Director at Counterpoint Research (Counterpoint Technology Market Research), Tarun Pathak, said in a statement.
Smartphone shipments in Russia grew by 7 percent annually and 38 percent sequentially during Q3 2017. “The Russian handset market grew during this quarter driven by aggressive marketing campaigns by new Chinese brands and subsequent price cuts from all the leading retail chains as consumer spending during third quarter of the year normally remains high due to the new academic year and a ‘back-to-school’ uptick,” said Minakshi Sharma, Research Associate at Counterpoint Research (Counterpoint Technology Market Research).
The online channel smartphone contribution has increased from 12 percent to 15 percent YoY in Russia. During this quarter, Xiaomi and Apple were among the leading smartphone brands in online sales.
“Apple reached record sales during the third quarter, growing 56 percent YoY due to a drop in the prices of its previous generation iPhone models, prior to the launch of the new iPhones,” Pathak said.
Samsung led the overall and smartphone market with market shares of 20 percent and 29 percent respectively during Q3 2017. Global brands captured almost 58 percent of the smartphone market followed by Chinese brands with 32 percent market share.

Xiaomi becomes top smartphone vendor in India in Q3, 2017: IDC

November 15, 2017 0

Xiaomi is the number one smartphone vendor in India with a market share of 23.5 percent.

xiaomi mi home
The year could not get any better for Xiaomi. The company sold record phonesduring the festive season last month, became one of the leading manufacturers in the country, and today, has climbed to the top spot in the list of smartphone vendors this quarter.
As per the latest IDC Quarterly Smartphone Tracker, Q3 2017, Xiaomi is the number one smartphone vendor in India with a market share of 23.5 percent. Three out of top five smartphones sold in the country were Xiaomi smartphones in the said quarter. The Chinese manufacturer shipped 9.2 million smartphones in the quarter and stood at par with Samsung, which also holds a market share of 23.5 percent.
Xiaomi-number-1-IDC
The company has also become the fastest growing smartphone brand in the country with a growth rate of nearly 300 percent year-on-year. Xiaomi entered the Indian smartphone market in 2014 and in its fairly recent existence has proven how the strategy of balancing price and features can help a foreign company attain tremendous popularity.
In the given quarter, three out of the top five smartphones included the Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4, and Redmi 4A. What is particularly interesting is that the Redmi Note 4 was launched last year and yet it continues to enjoy popularity of the Indian masses as the company shipped an astounding 4 million units of the smartphone in Q3, 2017. With a battery capacity of 4,100mAh and Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, the smartphone is available at a starting price of Rs 9,999.
The IDC data further shows that Xiaomi’s offline strategy through Large Format Retailer partners, Mi Preferred Partner stores and Mi Homes led to doubling of its offline sales in Q3. In the online segment, Xiaomi acquired 51 percent market share, again, attributed to the success of the top three phones by the company.
“Within three years of our entry into the Indian market, we have been able to achieve a never-seen-before feat of market dominance. As far as we are aware, we are the first brand across all sectors to have become a market leader within such a short span of time. Xiaomi’s focus on providing innovation to everyone and our commitment to the Indian market have propelled us to success on this incredible journey. We have truly innovated across our products, business model, infrastructure, marketing methods and, combined with our efficient team of 350+ employees, we have been able to achieve this immensely significant milestone,” Manu Jain, Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director, Xiaomi India said.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 , Mi Max 2 start receiving MIUI 9: How to install

November 11, 2017 0

MIUI 9 update brings a slew of new features to Xiaomi's smartphones.

miui 9 stock image
Last week, Xiaomi announced that it will gradually start rolling out a stable version of MIUI 9 for its smartphones. Now, Xiaomi has started rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat-based MIUI 9 update for the Redmi Note 4 and the Mi Max 2. To recall, Xiaomi had announced MIUI 9 alongside the Mi 5X in July. In India, Redmi Y1 was the first smartphone to run MIUI 9 out-of-the-box.
The stable version of the MIUI 9 update is being rolled out in phases via OTA, and users can check their device’s settings for the update. However, the OTA update might take some time to reach you as Xiaomi will be testing this update with a bunch of users first. Xiaomi has already said that the MIUI 9 update will be restricted to only a few devices.
Those of you already running MIUI 9 Beta ROM can simply check for the Global ROM update package from the updater app on your Mi smartphone and download the latest update package available to you. On the other hand, if the update is not showing up in your notification panel then you can search for ‘Updater app’ from the list then tap ‘Update’ and reboot to complete the installation.
xioami-redmi-note-4-muiu9
You can also flash the MIUI 9 update on the Redmi Note 4 via fastboot, here is a complete guide. Also, you can get all the download links for MIUI 9 here.
MIUI 9 features a split-screen mode allowing people to use two apps side-by-side. With dynamic resource allocation feature, frequently used apps will be given priority for a smoother experience. MIUI 9 also has a universal search feature that can differentiate images based on the keyword like location, expression, events and more. MIUI 9 also comes with a smart assistant to make things easier for you. Xiaomi says the assistant is smart enough to ‘find anything and everything’ — be it schedules, notes, and more. Lastly, there is also a smart app launcher that can launch an app based on on-screen contents.
Xiaomi is currently the second-largest smartphone brand in India, and it is inching closer to Samsung as the smartphone leader. According to Canalys recent report, Xiaomi shipped 4.8 million units during the second quarter and its CEO Lei Jun confirmed that its India revenues were up 328 percent during the first six months of 2017.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s with iPhone X-like notch spotted; but it is fake

November 09, 2017 0

Sorry, there is no Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s, yet.

xiaomi-mi-mix-2s-2
Where the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is still settling in, rumors about its successor is already out there. However, soon after an alleged leaked photo of the Mi MIX 2s came out, the folks at Android Central immediately doused the false fire, calling it a fake news.
A few hours ago, a photo of a bezel-less Xiaomi smartphone, which pretty much looked like the Mi MIX 2, was put up on the web, and it immediately started to circulating. The reason people were calling it the successor of the Mi MIX 2 is because this had an Apple iPhone X-like notch at the top. So people started to call it the Mi MIX 2s, which was be said to sport a camera in the top of the display this time.
However, soon after Android Central stepped in with its report, clarifying that this not any successor, but the Mi MIX 2 itself, simply running an app that mimics the notch. The report says that the leaked photos conveniently hide the bottom bezel, which is where the camera module is located on the Mi MIX 2.
The report further says that the themes store on MIUI has plenty of options that let users “convert” their phones to an iPhone X lookalike. iOS-based themes have been popular among Xiaomi customers for several years now, and the launch of the iPhone X has led to themes that allow users to emulate the notch on their Xiaomi phones.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX, launched in 2016, was the phone that prompted big smartphone makers to produce bezel-less devices. With the Mi MIX 2, Xiaomi entered a global market with its marquee device. The smartphone was launched in India last month, and Xiaomi has kicked off sales in Europe earlier this week.

November 01, 2017 0

Xiaomi is all geared up to introduce a new smartphone in India tomorrow. The company is teasing the upcoming device as the ‘best selfie smartphone’. While details are unclear at the moment, rumors hint at the launch of the Mi Note 3, which was launched globally in September.
The launch event will be broadcast and you can follow this link to catch the action live. Additionally, you could also follow Xiaomi’s Facebook or Twitter handles to keep track of the updates. As Xiaomi teased in one of its previous tweets, the upcoming smartphone will belong to a new series altogether. On October 26, Xiaomi India head Manu Kumar Jain posted a tweet, suggesting that there will be a new selfie smartphone coming from the company’s portfolio. Soon after, Xiaomi India tweeted more hints about the upcoming phone. The company wrote, “I’m not a Note. I’m not a Book. I’m a new series.” Now this nullifies past rumors about Mi Note 3 being the device in question.
Xiaomi is one of the top five vendors in India, and together with Samsung, it forms almost 50 percent of the smartphone market. Other brands in the top spot include Oppo and Vivo, both of which are focused on their camera capabilities.
The company recently announced that it has shipped 10 million smartphones in a month for the second time in a row. The announcement was made by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun in a video post on Chinese social networking site Weibo. In India, the company recorded 4 million smartphones sales during the festive season.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus new leak
Xiaomi is gearing up to launch the ‘best selfie smartphone’ in India tomorrow. As it introduces a new smartphones series tomorrow, Xiaomi is also rumored to upgrade its Redmi series this month. The Redmi 5 Plus has been showing up on leaks quite frequently now. Now the device has been leaked yet again in what is claimed to be the smartphone’s hands-on photos.
Complementing past leaks, the Redmi 5 Plus is seen again with a tall edge-to-edge display. If rumors are to be believed, then the Redmi 5 Plus would be the first smartphone in the series with such a design. The leaked photos (via GizChina) further reveal a lit display with on-screen buttons making up for the lack of a home button. The design is similar to what we have seen before. What’s missing here is the rear panel’s design which has so far shown a dual-camera setup aligned vertically.
As far as specifications are concerned, the Redmi 5 Plus is rumored to feature a 5.9-inch full HD+ display with aspect ratio of 18:9. The smartphone will possibly be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. The suspected dual-camera setup on the Redmi 5 Plus will possibly be a combination of 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors.
Along with the Redmi 5 Plus, Xiaomi is expected to launch the Redmi 5 as well which would be the lower variant of the two. The Redmi 5 is rumored to flaunt a 5.7-inch HD display with Snapdragon 450 SoC under its hood. The smartphone could pack 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.
The expected pricing details of the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus have been leaked as well. The Redmi 5 is predicted to retail at RMB 799 (approximately Rs 7,900). The Redmi 5 Plus, on the other hand, could be priced at RMB 1,099 (approximately Rs 10,800).

October 31, 2017 0

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is expected to launch sometime in November.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Weibo leak
A possible upcoming smartphone from Xiaomi is the Redmi 5 Plus. The smartphone has been showing up on leaks now and then. A retail box of the Redmi 5 Plus was discovered last month hinting at an imminent launch. Hands on photos of the alleged Redmi 5 Plus have now been shared on Weibo. The photos show the smartphone’s front and back design, and have been shot with a Xiaomi Mi 6.
Starting with the front panel, the Redmi 5 Plus has a fairly large display with very thin bezels on all sides. The top chin bezel the speaker grille and front camera. There doesn’t seem to be the capacitive buttons, which we see on Redmi smartphones. The smartphone will probably have on screen buttons instead. The rear design is quite interesting as it shows a dual-camera setup aligned vertically. The Redmi design is apparent with the antenna lines, and circular fingerprint sensor at the center.
Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus leak
The Weibo post claims that these photos are of the Redmi 5 Plus, but nothing can be confirmed as of now. As far as specifications are concerned, the Redmi 5 Plus is expected to feature a 5.9-inch full HD+ display with a possible 18:9 aspect ratio. It could be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 SoC or Snapdragon 450 SoC. The smartphone is rumored to launch in two variants of 3GB and 4GB of RAM. The base variant will likely be the Redmi 5, while the higher variant will launch as Redmi 5 Plus. As for the dual-camera setup, the specifics could be a combination of a 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras.
Along with the Redmi 5 Plus, Xiaomi is also speculated to launch the Redmi Note 5. The smartphone is rumored to come with a 5.5-inch full HD display, and a MediaTek Helio P25 SoC octa-core processor. It will possibly launch in two variants of 3GB RAM plus 32GB storage, and 4GB RAM with 64GB storage.
The Redmi Note 5 is also expected to sport a dual-camera module, which could include 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors. For selfies, it could house a 12-megapixel camera up front. Armed with a 4,000mAh battery, the Redmi Note 5 will possibly run on Android 7.1 Nougat-based MIUI 9. Xiaomi is also rumored to opt for a USB Type-C port on the Redmi Note 5.

Samsung, Xiaomi secure 45% of smartphone market in India: Counterpoint

October 28, 2017 0

India handset shipments reached an all-time high of over 84 million for the first time ever.

Samsung and Xiaomi together contributed to almost 45 per cent of the smartphone market in India in the third quarter of this year as the market grew 37 per cent (quarter on quarter) and 18 per cent (year on year), temporarily surpassing the US for the first time ever.
According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s ‘Market Monitor service’, India handset shipments reached an all-time high of over 84 million for the first time ever, driven by strong sale of both feature phones and smartphones.
“This is the first time since 2012 that Samsung and Xiaomi have reached this level of combined share. Additionally, the quarter was marked with return to growth for local handset players such as Micromax and Lava in the smartphone segment,” said Karn Chauhan, Research Analyst at Counterpoint Research.
Chinese brands performance remained strong and contributed to more than half of the total smartphone shipments.
It is the third consecutive quarter when their market share is well over 50 per cent after they took over local players in the second half of 2016.
However, local brands like Micromax and Lava grew 41 per cent and 24 per cent (QoQ), respectively, in the smartphone segment recovering from their all-time low during demonetisation last year.
Micromax Bharat 2 was the bestselling model in the sub $75 segment.
Xiaomi, iTel, Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus were the fastest growing smartphone brands during the third quarter driven by festive sales.
Featurephone segment declined 4 per cent (YoY) but grew 22 per cent (QoQ) driven by sub-Rs 1,000 devices as well as entry of Jiophone and Nokia branded phones in the market during the quarter.
“It has been almost a year since Reliance Jio launched its 4G LTE network officially, which drove an inflection point for mobile data consumption as well as demand for 4G capable phones,” said Shobhit Srivastava, Research Analyst at Counterpoint.
Within a year, Jio attracted more than 100 million subscribers to its network and now is targeting the next 100 million subscribers by bringing the first ever LTE featurephone to the market.
Three out of four mobile handsets shipped were “Made in India” during the third quarter.
Affordable mid end segment (Rs 10,000-Rs 15,000) was the fastest growing segment driven by strong performance of Xiaomi which contributed to almost half of the shipments.
“Three out of the top five bestselling smartphones in India were from Xiaomi alone. Xiaomi has been popular in the past for its value for money offerings,” said Counterpoint Associate Director Tarun Pathak.
Premium segment (above Rs 30,000) grew record three times (YoY) during the third quarter owing to the strong performance of Apple, OnePlus and Samsung.
Qualcomm was the leader among smartphone chipset suppliers.

Xiaomi will be launching the latest version of its custom user interface MIUI on November 2 in India. Global MIUI 9 is set to be announced for release in India, and will likely begin rolling out to Xiaomi devices in India on the same day. The announcement was made via Twitter on the company’s special handle for MIUI in India, and was also retweeted by the Xiaomi India’s verified Twitter handle. Currently, the latest stable version of the interface is MIUI 8.
MIUI 9 has been available in beta form since August, although as a non-stable version, it requires users to go through specific steps to install it on their phones. Regular users who do not actively install the beta version and rely on regular over-the-air updates have been limited to the stable version of MIUI 8. With this announcement, it is likely that users will see their phones being updated to the latest MIUI version come November 2 via OTA updates.
Xiaomi is expected to launch a new smartphone in India on the same day, which could be the Mi Note 3. Launched alongside the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 in September, the Mi Note 3 will sit above the current mid-tier range which includes the Xiaomi Mi A1 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 in positioning, and is expected to cost around Rs 20,000 or more if it is indeed launched. Rumors point to this device based on a tweet by Manu Kumar Jain which teases a selfie-centric smartphone to be launched. The Xiaomi Mi Note 3 comes with a 16-megapixel front camera and a dual-camera setup at the rear with two 12-megapixel sensors, which falls in line with the selfie-centric positioning of the device that’s set to launch.
Xiaomi also launched the Mi MIX 2 in India earlier this month, priced at Rs 35,999. The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, and comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The key feature of the Mi MIX 2 is its bezel-less design, with the 6-inch full HD+ screen occupying nearly the entire front of the phone. It also comes with a ceramic rear, along with a fingerprint sensor and 12-megapixel single-lens sensor.
