Popular messaging service WhatsApp has finally rolled out a version for KaiOS, the operating system that powers the JioPhone.

In an official post, WhatsApp said that the WhatsApp service has been rolled out for JioPhone devices across India. According to the company, this new app for KaiOS will “give people a simple, reliable, and secure way to communicate with friends and family.”With this new app, JioPhone users will be able to enjoy familiar features of WhatsApp which includes fast and reliable messaging, and send multimedia content such as photos and videos. Similar to its app on the other platforms that WhatsApp is available on, all messages will be end-to-end encrypted.

The post adds that users can easily record and send voice messages with a couple of taps. The process to get started with WhatsApp for JioPhone is the same as other platforms. You need to verify your phone number, and once WhatsApp is able to authenticate you as the user, you can message your friends and contacts one-on-one or in groups.

To install WhatsApp on your JioPhone, visit the JioPhone AppStore starting today. Since this is a phased rollout, all JioPhones will get to experience the app by September 20, 2018, according to WhatsApp.

“Millions of people across India can now use WhatsApp private messaging on the best-in-class JioPhone across India,” said Chris Daniels, Vice President, WhatsApp. He added, “By designing this new app for KaiOS, we hope to expand the ability for people to communicate with anyone in India and around the world by offering the best messaging experience possible to JioPhone users.”

WhatsApp’s new feature might soon allow users to quickly switch from voice to video calls

WhatsApp has also confirmed group voice calls in its latest beta version for Android.

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to quickly switch from voice to video call while the voice call is in progress. According to @WABetaInfo, a popular fab website that checks Beta versions in development, in the new Android update, WhatsApp is developing a new button that will allow to users to quickly switch from voice to video call without stopping the voice call in progress.

The feature is seen in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.17.163 version, it tweeted. The recipient, however, will be able to reject the upcoming video call if he or she wants. “WhatsApp is also testing a feature that will allow to direcly mute a video,” the report added.

The instant messaging app has also confirmed group voice calls in its latest beta version for Android. Facebook-owned WhatsApp last month announced the official rollout of its most anticipated feature ‘Delete for Everyone’ that allows its over one billion users revoke their messages in case they sent those to a wrong person or a group.

The popular messaging service may also be working on an app for iPad users as references of WhatsApp for iPad were spotted on latest WhatsApp desktop app. WhatsApp has over 200 million monthly active users in India and 1.2 billion users worldwide. Its “Status” feature now has 300 million daily active users.

WhatsApp’s deleted messages can still be read; here’s how

WhatsApp allows you to recall or delete a sent message. However, this trick will show you the message even after it has been deleted.

WhatsApp‘s most popular features in recent times is the message recall or ‘Delete for Everyone’ option that allows you to recall a particular message which has been inadvertently sent. Recently, we discovered that there is no time limit to recalling a sent message. Now, it has been found that the ‘delete for everyone’ feature can be easily surpassed. Here’s how you can still view a deleted message without rooting the device, or tampering with the app.

Currently, if you are on the latest version of WhatsApp for Android or iOS, you can delete or recall a message by tapping on the message and choosing the delete option. From here, you can decided to whether delete it for yourself or for everyone. When launched, it was reported that a user could recall or delete a message within 7 minutes of the message being sent. However, in our own tests, we found the limit can be easily surpassed.

When deleted, ‘This message was deleted’ message shows in the chat instead of the particular message. Now, this can be unnerving for some curious minds who want to know what exactly was the message which was deleted. It could even be for law purposes. For this, an app called ‘Notification History’ can help solve the mystery of a deleted message. We tested the process on an Android device and this is how it works.

Ensure you are running the latest version of WhatsApp on your device. Install ‘Notification History’ app from the Play Store and allow the required permissions to be able to read the deleted message. When you receive a message on WhatsApp, the Notification History app will show you a log of all the notification, along with the message. Interestingly, this app does not show a preview but the entire message. So there’s no scope of missing out on the details. If you tap on the log, you will be able to see the message. However, there is a limitation of characters. In our tests, a fairly long message, above 100 characters, was visible. This is in contrast to your device’s own notification settings where only a small portion of the text is shown.

Now, if the message is deleted from the sender’s end, the Notification History app will show you that notification as well, without deleting the previous message. So essentially, you get to know the exact time and content of the message, along with when it was deleted, all in sequential order, without you having to scramble through WhatsApp.

It is worth mentioning that this workaround, which was first reported on Spanish website, androidjefe, is possible only on an Android device because, on this platform, WhatsApp only changes the alert’s content whereas, on iOS, it deletes the entire notification.

In addition to this app, you can also access the notification log by long-pressing the home screen, and then tapping on Widgets > Activities > Settings > Notification log. From here you can access the system’s notification log. On stock Android, the Settings widget can give access to the notification log.

This fake WhatsApp app already has over a million downloads

The original WhatsApp app has a billion downloads on the Play Store.

Yesterday, an imposter app, posing to be WhatsApp was spotted on the Google Play Store. The app was named “Update WhatsApp Messenger” with developer name as ‘WhatsApp Inc*’. It has barely been 24 hours of the app being spotted, and it has over a million downloads already.

To be fair, it is very easy to fall for the dupe app. The only difference between the original and the fake app is that the fake one has added a Unicode character space after the WhatsApp Inc. name. In a computer code the difference is more obvious—it reads WhatsApp+Inc%C2%A0. But to average Android users browsing Google Play, that character space would be easy to miss.

The fake app was spotted by a Reddit user just yesterday. If it isn’t clear already, the dummy app was nothing close to a chat app, but served users with ads to download other apps. As Motherboard reported the app has been downloaded at least 1 million times till now. You should know, the original WhatsApp has 1 billion downloads.

The dummy app’s developer is apparently unknown, but the culprit later changed the name of the app to “Dual Whatsweb Update,” and removed the “WhatsApp Inc.” developer title. It has since been removed from Google Play.

“I can confirm that the app was removed from Google Play and the developer account was suspended for violating our program policies,” a Google spokesperson told PCMag.

Reportedly, there is also a fake version of popular mobile game Temple Run 2 making round on Google Play Store, which was uploaded on the platform in October. There is also one that has been posing as WhatsApp Business, which already has several users complaining about it in the comments section.

WhatsApp was briefly down

WhatsApp was down for a bit, and not surprisingly, social media went bonkers.

WhatsApp, the most popular messaging app with over 1.3 billion users went down briefly. Any social platform or messaging app outage leaves people crazy thinking what to do with their smartphones now. WhatsApp will normally open on your smartphone and you may think that it is working fine. However, on iOS you will notice that it’ll show “Connecting” on top of the app. If you try sending a message it won’t be delivered to the recipient.

WhatsApp’s outage is being seen as a network failure, and will possibly end up fooling many people thinking that there is a connectivity issue. You can check and see if other apps online are working fine or not. BGR India reached out to WhatsApp to understand the reason behind the outage.

A WhatsApp spokesperson responded saying, ““Earlier today, WhatsApp users globally had trouble accessing the app for about an hour. This issue has been fixed and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

But obviously, any outage has a direct effect on Twitter with the influx of memes. Here’s a look at how people are reacted to the WhatsApp outage.

Reliance Jio to ‘soon announce’ next JioPhone pre-booking date

Reports have surfaced online claiming that Reliance Jio has stopped production of the JioPhone.

Earlier today, reports surfaced online claiming that Reliance Jio has stopped production of the JioPhone as the company shifts focus to the Android ecosystem. When you look at the scale and reach of Android, this move makes sense. But turns out that is not the case, at least for now.

BGR India reached out to a person with insider knowledge who claims that production of the Reliance JioPhone is very much on track. In fact, the company is looking at delivering the device to the 6 million who pre-ordered. Moreover, the company will also soon announce a new date for the pre-orders to begin again.

This is reiterated in a statement sent to BGR India by Reliance Jio’s spokesperson, which says, “JioPhone, ‘India ka smartphone’ is committed to fulfilling the country’s digital vision. Jio welcomes the initial 6 million Indians who are moving to digital life with the JioPhone and will soon announce the next JioPhone booking date.”

Our source further says that Reliance Jio is in talks with developers to come up with popular apps that are compatible with KaiOS. Despite being a feature phone, the JioPhone does bring a lot to the table, courtesy of Jio’s suite of apps. But one bone of contention has been the lack of popular apps such as WhatsAppand Facebook among others. Once a variant of these apps are launched for the JioPhone, there is no reason why it couldn’t offer an experience that can rival entry-level Android smartphones.

There is no denying that Reliance Jio has taken the market by storm with its ‘effectively priced Rs zero’ JioPhone. But lately, incumbent telecom companies have put their hats in the ring by launching uber-affordable smartphones with bundled tariff plans. Airtel has joined hands with the likes of Karbonn and Celkon to launch such entry-level smartphones, while Vodafone too is reportedly doing the same.

WhatsApp’s ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature finally rolled out

Messages you delete for everyone will be replaced with "This message was deleted" in your recipients' chats.

WhatsApp has finally rolled out its most anticipated feature ‘Delete for Everyone’ that allows its over one billion users revoke their messages in case they sent those to a wrong person or a group. You can only delete messages for everyone for up to seven minutes after sending.

“Once seven minutes have passed, there is no way to delete messages for everyone,” Facebook-owned WhatsApp said in its updated FAQ. “In order for messages to be successfully deleted for everyone, both you and your recipient must be using the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, iPhone or Windows Phone,” the micro-blogging platform said.

WhatsApp was working on this feature for almost a year. You can now delete messages for everyone or just for yourself. “Deleting messages for everyone allows you to delete specific messages you have sent to either a group or an individual chat. This is particularly useful if you sent a message to the wrong chat or if the message you sent contains a mistake,” WhatsApp noted.

Messages you successfully delete for everyone will be replaced with “This message was deleted” in your recipients’ chats. Similarly, if you see “This message was deleted” in a chat, it means that the sender deleted their message for everyone.

This is how it works: Open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete. Tap and hold the message and choose Delete from the menu. Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once. Then tap “Delete for Everyone”.

“If you or your recipient are not using the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, iPhone or Windows Phone, this feature will not be supported,” WhatsApp said.

Recipients may see your message before it’s deleted or if deletion was not successful. According to WABetaInfo, a fan website that tracks WhatsApp, this feature works for messages in text, videos, GIFs, pictures, voice messages, quoted messages and status replies.

The second part is to delete messages only for yourself. Deleting messages for yourself allows you to delete your copy of messages you’ve sent or received from your phone.

“This has no effect on your recipients’ chats. Your recipients will still see the messages in their chat screen,” WhatsApp said. For this, open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete.

Tap and hold the message and choose Delete from the menu. Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once. Then tap “Delete for Me”.

“The feature is being slowly rolled out and users can reinstall WhatsApp in order to download from the server the latest configuration,” WABetaInfo said.

WhatsApp ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature is finally here: Here’s how it works

You however need to be really quick to recall a sent WhatsApp message.

If you have been sending messages to unintended recipients on WhatsApp and having awkward apology sessions thereafter, this piece of information will cheer you up. After working on the feature for quite some time, the message revoke or delete message for everyone is finally out of beta, and being rolled out to iOS users.

Starting today, WhatsApp is slowly rolling out the Delete for Everyone feature for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone users. As WABetainfo.com notes, the feature allows you to delete messages in private chats or group conversations. The caveat here is that both the sender and receiver need to be on the latest WhatsApp version.

As is the case with a lot of new WhatsApp features, the Delete for Everyone feature is also being rolled out gradually and you may not immediately get the prompt for the update. The feature applies to text messages, images, videos, GIFs, voice messages, contact cards, files, locations, quoted messages, status replies, and stickers (a new feature expected to be rolled out soon).

How Delete for Everyone feature works

When you delete the unintended message, WhatsApp sends a fake copy of the message to the recipient. When the recipient receives that copy, their device won’t show the notification, nor will it save it in his chat history, but it will check if there is the ID of the message in WhatsApp’s database, locate it, and correctly revoke it.

The revoked or recalled messages will also be deleted in the notifications center on iOS. On Android, this message will be replaced with “This message was deleted for everyone”. For quoted messages, WhatsApp is currently not recalling the message that is contained in a quoted reply. Broadcast List also does not support message revoking ability. WhatsApp for Symbian also does not support the feature.

One of the most important things to note here is that you can only use ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature within seven minutes of sending an unintended message. Now this could be a little tricky given how millions of conversations are happening on the platform every minute and in group conversations, it is highly unlikely of members not seeing the unintended message almost as soon as it is sent. Secondly, WhatsApp will not show you the notification for message revoke. On Android, “This message was deleted for everyone” will be the only indication.

WhatsApp now allows over 256 users in a Group; here’s a quick way to cross the user limit

This little trick will let you add more members to a WhatsApp group.

WhatsApp is the one-stop destination for our daily chatter. From work to friends, friends of friends, family, and now businesses, we’re all on WhatsApp. Although it gets annoying at times, WhatsApp Groups are the most convenient and flawless way of sending out any information. However, there’s an official limit of 256 users for each WhatsApp Group. Turns out, there’s a quick way of circumventing that limit.

There are families, and then, there are extended families. If you are aware of the latter category, you would know how difficult it is to keep a track of multiple groups just because one couldn’t fit them all! But, did you know there was a little trick you could do to go beyond the permissible limit and cram more users in a single group?

Earlier, the only way to add members was to individually choose them from the list. With the share link, WhatsApp made it possible for users to invite users to join their group through a link. A group admin can use the ‘Invite to Group via Link’ to add more members. The link also allows members to share invites on other public platforms. The trick is hidden right inside this shortcut to add participants.

Using the share link, it is possible for you to add members more than the limit of 256 users. To check if the feature actually works, we used a group with exact 256 members as a case and then tried to add more participant using the share link.

As you can see in the screenshots below, by using the simple ‘Add Participant’ feature, an error message popped saying maximum group capacity reached. However, when we used the share link to add a user, the group member count increased to 257.

WhatsApp video, audio group calls being tested; may rollout next year

Little late to the party, but WhatsApp is now finally working on group audio and video calls.

WhatsApp audio and video calls can easily be considered one of the app’s most popular features. After all, a big bunch of users have started using it as an alternative for a cellular call. But there is one thing the feature does not offer that the regular calls do, and that is conferencing. Presently, WhatsApp only allows one-to-one audio or video calls. However, according to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing the group calling feature on the app.

The latest 2.17.70 beta release contains a number of references to audio conference calling. Which means, a user may soon be able to add other WhatsApp users while being on an audio call with someone. A line of code was discovered, which suggested that, if a user makes a voice call to someone on WhatsApp, the app will send a request to the server whether the person is busy or not. The latest beta update is full of similar references. Fewer, yet similar, references for the same have been found for video calling. However, we must mention that WABetaInfo also pointed out that the feature “will be available for the next year”.

Though exciting, the reports of WhatsApp’s integration of group calling is kind of a stale news. Last year in April, Facebook Messenger added support for group voice calling, which allows calls to up to 50 people at a time. Then in December last year, the platform also introduced group video calling feature, which also allows conferencing in up to 50 people simultaneously, of which only six can be seen. In fact, just last week, Microsoft also announced a group video calling feature for Skype Lite.

Further, talking about features to come. Another report from WABetaInfosuggests that administrators on WhatsApp groups will soon be able to choose if other participants can modify the subject of the group, its icon, and its description. This was spotted on Google Play Beta Program in the version 2.17.387. WhatsApp has also announced advanced features for improved group management, including a tool that will prevent the group creator to be deleted from the group by other administrators

Giving its over one billion users more power to connect, WhatsApp has confirmed group voice calls in its latest beta version of Android. According to WaBetaInfo, a popular website that tests new WhatsApp features early, the 2.17.70 beta WhatsApp update has confirmed group calls.

“The 2.17.70 iOS update has very hidden references to group calls! Before it was an internal news, now it’s all confirmed. There are a lot of hidden references about group voice calls, but there is only one reference about group video calls. So group video calls are partially confirmed at the moment,” WaBetaInfo tweeted on Sunday.

It was earlier reported that the Facebook-owned messaging app was working on a group voice calls and could release the feature next year. Facebook already has a similar feature on Messenger.

“WhatsApp 2.17.70 sends a request to the server to ask if the user you are calling is in another group call!” WaBetaInfo tweeted. ”Note that these references we found are very strong (but they aren’t visible for you at present) and they have allowed us to understand what WhatsApp is going to add in the application, as we did for WhatsApp for iPad,” it added.

The newest beta version of WhatsApp for Android has several updates, including a smaller app size and a feature that would notify your friends when you change your number. According to technology website Teknepolis, one major update is that when you change your phone number in WhatsApp, your contacts would receive notification of the update. The feature would work every time you change your phone number.

WhatsApp has also announced advanced features for improved group management, including a tool that will prevent the group creator to be deleted from the group by other administrators. The administrators on WhatsApp groups will also be able to choose if other participants can modify the subject of the group, its icon and its description. Reports said recently that WhatsApp’s much anticipated “unsend” feature will be soon rolled out to all users.

WhatsApp Live Location sharing rolls out in India for iOS, Android apps

WhatsApp has been introducing a host of new features on its app this past year. WhatsApp’s latest feature now allows users to share their location in real-time with their contacts. Live Location on WhatsApp has been rolled out to both iOS and Android users.

The Live Location feature has been rumored for quite a few months now. It was even spotted on the beta versions of WhatsApp hinting on its imminent launch. To use this feature, simply tap on the attach button located next to the text bar on your chats. Under “Location” there will be a new option to ‘Share Live Location’. Selecting this will allow your friends and family to track you real-time on a map. You can choose to set the duration for how long your location can be tracked on the map.

Live Location is enabled for both single and group chats. In a group chat, more than one person can send their location at the same time. All the Live Locations sent on one group will be visible on a single map instead of independent ones. As seen in the screenshots, you can set time duration of 15 minutes, 1 hour and 8 hours for letting others view your Live Location.

Once your Live Location is sent you can simply tap on “Stop Sharing”, which will be available just below your map card. The same will be available in a group chat where you can stop sharing by tapping on the Live Location map. Below the map you will see your profile, and you can tap on it to stop sharing your real-time location.

WhatsApp already allows you to share static location with your contacts. With Live Location, users can benefit from being able to let their friends and family know where they are in terms of safety. Although there are risks involved, WhatsApp gives complete user control over this feature. WhatsApp also says that Live Location is protected with end-to-end encryption, as is the case with content and texts sent over the messaging app.

WhatsApp Rolling Out ‘WhatsApp Business’ As A Standalone App

The signature of Mark Zuckerberg is finalizing the details of WhatsApp Business for its launch, that should take place in just a few weeks. This messaging service for companies, in relation to its customers, will have its own application for both Android and iOS devices. Before the application opens, which we had full knowledge of would exist, we have a first view of how it will be and, on the other hand, what additional features it will offer to companies that use it.

As we said, it will be an independent app that we will find in the Google Play Store – for Android devices – and will be available in the same way in the App Store – for iOS, iPhones. In this way, companies – or their employees – will have easier the differentiation of profiles between the staff and the business account. A simpler and safer way to manage conversations. However, within WhatsApp Business, there will also be substantial differences for small businesses and the profiles of larger companies.

What’s New in the WhatsApp Business App

An important development: there will be fixed telephone support. That is, now WhatsApp Business will allow us to set up a business profile using a landline number, rather than a mobile phone number. In this way, companies with the fixed line will not require the configuration of the profile with a personal number, but with the own telephone number of the office, for example. However, in many other aspects, we find that the app is the same. The design has not changed, at least for the moment, and features like ‘camera, chats, states and calls’ are maintained. That is the same sections.

What’s new are two other sections in ‘Settings’: Business Settings and Statistics. In the second of these two sections, although for the moment only the messages sent, received and read can be controlled, there will soon be more usage and interaction statistics. Also in the settings, but in another section, you can configure a profile image, company name and ‘verification’. This is what is part of the company profile, similar to the one we currently have.

There are some other features specific and unique that you can already see in the beta of WhatsApp Business. They are not all yet available because Mark Zuckerberg’s signature is only in an internal test of the application with few associated with the ‘test’ program. But at this point, we have been able to already prove exclusive features of WhatsApp Business as ‘absent state’ messages. Basically, these are automatic messages that can be configured in detail, and serve to alert customers or contacts that can not be answered to their requests because there is no one, at that time, available for it.

This type of automatic messages can be configured for every Saturday and Sunday, for example, or simply activate and deactivate manually whenever we want. At the moment, WhatsApp Business is available in the Google Play Store on this link, but ‘invisible’. This means that although the application is registered in the official Google Play store for Android, and can be downloaded, it is only visible to subscribers to the beta program. And at the moment very few have been able to enter, but WhatsApp is about to launch the application for more users.

Telegram 4.4 brings live locations, new media player, more

Cloud-based instant messaging service Telegram, has rolled out the version 4.4 of the app. And considering the number of new features and improvements it brings, it can fairly be treated as a major update. And the highlight of the update is the live location feature, which interestingly WhatsApp is also rumored to be working on. Besides that, the update also includes a new media player, more varied language support, a new translation platform, and improved group chats. The feature is rolling out to both iOS and Android platforms, as we speak.

Live location

Talking about the live locations first, as the name suggests, the feature allows users to share real time location with other Telegram users. Which means, if you are at point A and share your location with a friend from there, and then you go on to move to point B, with live location, the person you share your location with will receive your current location and will be able to follow you through the transit. Facebook Messenger as a similar feature too. And like we mentioned, WhatsApp is expected to roll out real-time locations as well.

On Telegram, you can share your location with another individual or on a group chat for a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of eight hours. Enabling the feature is pretty much similar to how you’d normally share a location. Tap on Attachments, and choose Locations. The user you share it with then be about to track you live. At any point of time, you can stop sharing the location.

New media player

Telegram has redesigned its ‘in-app’ audio player improving the playback support for MP3 audio files along with other music files that you will receive using the app. Telegram has also uploaded some free music files on their @cctracks channel. To download any audio file, you need to tap on the play button to start the audio playback. You can tap on the ‘title of the playing track’; to access the cover image and the playlist of that particular chat.

Translation platform

Another new feature that comes with the new app version is is the new ‘translation platform’. As part of this new platform, you can now use the platform to suggest alternative words or phrases for translation of elements within the app. You can also visit the platform to suggest alternative translations or even vote for the alternatives suggested by other users.

Others

Besides these, Telegram also rolled out certain improvements with the update, one of which is to the Telegram group chat experience. First of all, administrators of the groups will now have a badge against their name, so they can be easily spotted by all member. Secondly, administrators for Telegram supergroups now have the option to control if new members can see ‘earlier message history’ of that group.

All hackers need is a few lines of code to snoop into your private lives.

When WhatsApp allowed users to disable the ‘last seen at’ feature on its app some years ago, it was hailed as a great move. While privacy is a contentious issue in the internet world, commentators said that WhatsApp was trying its best to please those who didn’t want to share every bit of their activity on the app. However, reports have now emerged that a technical flaw on the app can allow hackers to secure details of users’ sleeping patterns depending on when they were seen ‘online’.

While WhatsApp has an option to show your ‘last seen at’ status to either everyone or only your contacts or no one, it doesn’t allow users to hide their ‘online’ status — something that Google allows in Hangouts. Hence, anybody can monitor when the user is online. Hackers can even reveal who you are talking to most, according to reports. The flaw was discovered by security researcher Rob Heaton who claimed that only a few lines of JavaScript code is required to expose user details.

He explained that by using a Chrome extension he could log every time a contact was using WhatsApp and then correlate that data with other uses. His efforts indicate that if two contacts popped up at the same time, it was likely they were messaging each other. Thus, allowing hackers to know who what your most frequent chats are. “The plan is simple. Every 10 seconds, you check your target’s WhatsApp status, and note if they are online or not,” Heaton explained in a blog post titled ‘Tracking friends and strangers using WhatsApp’.

The downside of this development is that if the few lines of code are so simple to write, it could well be managed by common people. And they’d be urged to misuse WhatsApp’s flaws to snoop into people. Businesses and personal services providers could also gain access to the private lives of people and leverage them. While that is a far-fetched thought right now, it is not impossible. It is not clear how WhatsApp, which has over a billion users, plans to correct this flaw.

How to save WhatsApp Stories to your phone without taking screenshots

Since Snapchat went big with its stories, and Instagram took some bold inspiration from the feature last year, we have been seeing the Stories feature on almost every social media platform now. Facebook has it, Messenger has it, and so does WhatsApp, which basically intended to replace the text status, with a Story status. Now, neither of these platforms allow you to download someone else’s story, for obvious reasons. However, where there is tech, there’s a hack, and there is one to download someone’s story as well.

However, before we actually demonstrate to you how you can download somebody’s story status, we want to urge you to not misuse the hack. You like a quote and you download it, that’s ok, but do not misuse the hack to invade someone’s privacy, by downloading their videos or pictures. It is someone else’s property and does not belong to be in your phone.

If you promise to not misuse it, following is a step-by-step demo of how you can now download a status story, instead of taking a screenshot. This hack was first spotted by Techook. First of all, you must know, every time you view someone’s WhatsApp story, it gets stored locally on your device for 24 hours. You can’t see them in your gallery, but it does remain hidden in your phone’s memory, and they disappear from your WhatsApp cached storage only after 24 hours or if it is pulled down by a user.

Now, since you know that the WhatsApp Stories stays put on your phone, move to your Android device’s file manager. Before you search for the file, head to the setting of the file managing app, and toggle on the option, which reads, ‘Show hidden files’.

Now, go back to the main screen that opened when you launched the file manager app. On the top you will so two tabs, one of which will read ‘Categories’ and the other ‘Local’. Tap on Local > Internal storage. Scroll down to find a folder of WhatsApp and tap on it. Choose ‘Media’ from the folder, and right at the top, you will see a folder called ‘.Statuses’. When you will tap on it, all your viewed WhatsApp stories in the past 24 hours will show up.

In order to save them, long tap on a video, and copy it. Create a new folder locally and paste it to that. Now you can view that status story, any time you want, even when the user pulls it down.

After a spate of train accidents in the country that has led to over 300 deaths in 2017, railway officials have been barred from using WhatsApp while on duty. A circular has been issued by the Delhi division of Indian Railways to its entire staff that includes drivers, guards and TTEs, asking them not to use the messaging app during duty hours, India Today reported. WhatsApp has been termed as a “major distraction” by the authorities.

Anyone violating the orders would be dealt with strictly, the circular noted. Such orders would eventually be issued across all railway divisions, and not just in Delhi. “It was noted that several staff associated with the safety department or the operational staff were indulging in WhatsApp and YouTube during working hours. This caused major distraction and thus compromised passenger safety. They have been told not to use these apps and entertainment medium and perform their duty with greater efficiency and alertness,” a railway official reportedly said.

The ban would be applicable to all maintenance and safety staff in the railways. It includes track-men, gang men guards on crossings, loco pilots, and train guards. Even mid-level station managers and superintendents are prohibited from using the apps during work hours. However, it is not clear when the ban comes into effect. All communication among staff members would have to be done via walkie-talkies. Additionally, drivers and guards have been asked to switch off their mobile phones while on duty.

WhatsApp and YouTube are surely the most popular apps in India. This country accounts for WhatsApp’s largest user base in the world, and over 96 percent of smartphones in India have WhatsApp, a 2016 study revealed. It has a higher penetration than Facebook’s Messenger application, and homegrown messaging app Hike. YouTube, too, has 180 million users in India, which is one of its top global markets. In August, the video-sharing platform stated that 85 percent of its India traffic was coming from smartphones. With the government pushing for Wi-Fi availability across major railway stations as part of its Digital India initiative, it is only natural that officials used apps freely.
