Chinese smartphone player Xiaomi has become the fifth largest smartphone brand in Russia during Q3 2017, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service.
“Xiaomi grew by 325 percent YoY and was the fastest growing smartphone brand in Russia in both online as well as offline sales,” the Associate Director at Counterpoint Research (Counterpoint Technology Market Research), Tarun Pathak, said in a statement.
Smartphone shipments in Russia grew by 7 percent annually and 38 percent sequentially during Q3 2017. “The Russian handset market grew during this quarter driven by aggressive marketing campaigns by new Chinese brands and subsequent price cuts from all the leading retail chains as consumer spending during third quarter of the year normally remains high due to the new academic year and a ‘back-to-school’ uptick,” said Minakshi Sharma, Research Associate at Counterpoint Research (Counterpoint Technology Market Research).
The online channel smartphone contribution has increased from 12 percent to 15 percent YoY in Russia. During this quarter, Xiaomi and Apple were among the leading smartphone brands in online sales.
“Apple reached record sales during the third quarter, growing 56 percent YoY due to a drop in the prices of its previous generation iPhone models, prior to the launch of the new iPhones,” Pathak said.
Samsung led the overall and smartphone market with market shares of 20 percent and 29 percent respectively during Q3 2017. Global brands captured almost 58 percent of the smartphone market followed by Chinese brands with 32 percent market share.
Xiaomi (325 percent), Bright and Quick (177 percent) and Huawei (140 percent) were the fastest growing Chinese brands YoY. However, local smartphone brands like Tele2 and Prestigio grew by 61 percent and 54 percent QoQ respectively.

Vodafone, Huawei achieve first 5G data connection in Italy

November 09, 2017 0

And here we are still struggling with a decent 4G connection.

After Huawei and Vodafone conducted 5G trials in Italy, the two have now successfully achieved their first 5G data connection. Vodafone and Huawei made available a radio base station using Massive MIMO technology.
These trials were promoted by the Ministry for Economic Development in Milan. Vodafone was selected to conduct these 5G trials on frequencies in the 3.7-3.8GHz portion of spectrum that was made available by the Ministry. However, this was still done a little old school way with connections being achieved using an antenna located at the Vodafone Village in Milan, marking the start of the planned network rollout.
This was a real live test demonstrating use of 5G Prototype equipment that already meets the current 3GPP standard, including Massive MIMO technology, which increases both capacity and coverage. Vodafone says, during the test, it was possible to appreciate the performance of the 5G network, reaching download speeds of more than 2.7GB per second, with a latency of just over a millisecond.
While Vodafone has tested its first 5G connection, and Indians are still grappling with a decent 4G connection, the Indian government too has been planning to pave way for 5G. Currently, the minimum-mandated internet speed in the country is just 512Kbps, which is far lesser than global speeds which float around 50-70Mbps. In order to boost the internet speed on mobile and broadband networks, the government is looking at increasing the mandatory speed to at least 2Mbps and more.
Meanwhile, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said in its ‘Consultation Paper on Data Speed Under Wireless Broadband Plans’ that incumbent telecom operators are averse to the idea of having a higher threshold for internet speeds, owing to a range of concerns. These include low coverage zones, high rise buildings, external factors such as device quality, peak time, transmission bandwidth, and website behavior among others.

Huawei Mate 10 live photo leaked ahead of October 16 launch

September 08, 2017 0
Huawei Mate 10 live image
Huawei is all set to unveil the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro smartphones on October 16 in Berlin, Germany. Huawei recently launched the Kirin 970 SoC, and announced that it would debut on the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro. Huawei also confirmed a dual-camera setup on the Mate 10 through a video teaser. With leaks and rumors making its presence frequently, the first alleged live photo of the Mate 10 has leaked.
Shared by 91mobiles, the photo shows the alleged front panel of the Mate 10 with the display on. The Mate 10 sports a large display with no physical home button, and looks quite similar to its predecessor, the Mate 9. However, the top and bottom bezels on the Mate 10 are visibly thinner. The Huawei branding is also visible on the bottom bezel. This however goes against some reports suggesting a bezel-free display on the Mate 10.
In comparison to the recent CAD-based renders of the Mate 10, the smartphone’s design is different. The concept renders showed the Mate 10 with a physical home button upfront, which is missing on the live image. The renders also revealed the dual cameras placed vertically at the back. The Mate 10 also looks quite bulky with the rear panel slightly curved at the center.

In terms of specifications, the dual-camera setup on the Mate 10 will include a pair of 12-megapixel RGB sensor, and a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor. Carrying on the tradition, the cameras on the Mate 10 will be co-developed with Leica. It’s worth noting that the same dual-camera setup is found on the Mate 9, and the Huawei P10 as well. This information was drawn from the company’s recent teaser of the Mate 10.
