Crack the Queens Puzzle to win a $1 million prize

September 04, 2017 0

Researchers believe any program that can crack the "Queens Puzzle", would be so powerful that it could solve tasks considered impossible.

chess-stock-image
Building a computer programme to solve a chess problem called the Queens Puzzle could win you a prize of million dollars, say scientists who have thrown open a challenge that they claim is impossible to crack. Devised in 1850, the Queens Puzzle originally challenged a player to place eight queens on a standard chessboard so that no two queens could attack each other.
This means putting one queen in each row so that no two queens are in the same column, and no two queens are in the same diagonal. Although the problem has been solved by human beings, once the chess board increases to a large size no computer programme can solve it.
Researchers from the University of St Andrews in the UK believe any programme that can crack the famous “Queens Puzzle”, would be so powerful that it could solve tasks currently considered impossible, such as decrypting the toughest security on the internet. They found that once the chess board reached 1,000 by 1,000 squares, computer programmes could no longer cope with the vast number of options and sunk into a potentially eternal struggle.
The struggle is akin to the fictional “super computer” Deep Thought in Douglas Adams’ popular sci-fi series the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which took seven and a half million years to provide an answer to the ‘Meaning of Everything’, researchers said.
“If you could write a computer programme that could solve the problem really fast, you could adapt it to solve many of the most important problems that affect us all daily,” said Ian Gent, a professor at St Andrews. “This includes trivial challenges like working out the largest group of your Facebook friends who do not know each other or very important ones like cracking the codes that keep all our online transactions safe,” Gent added.

The reason these problems are so difficult for computer programmes is that there are so many options to consider that it can take many years, researchers said. This is due to a process of “backtracking” an algorithm used in programming where every possible option is considered and then “backed away” from until the correct solution is found, they said.
“However, this is all theoretical, in practice, nobody has ever come close to writing a programme that can solve the problem quickly. So what our research has shown is that for all practical purposes it can not be done,” said Peter Nightingale, a senior research fellow at St Andrews. The prize money of one million USD, awarded by Clay Mathematics Institute in the US is available to anyone who can solve the puzzle.
The study was published today in the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research.

Reliance JioPhone deliveries to begin from September 21: Report

September 04, 2017 0

Pre-bookings for the JioPhone started on August 24, but have been halted temporarily owing to high demand.

Reliance-JioPhone
Ever since its launch, the Reliance JioPhone has been the talk of the town. The official pre-bookings for the JioPhone began on August 24 via its official portals and offline through the authorized retail stores. The pre-booking continued till August 26 after which, it had to be stalled due to exceeded requests. The craze for the JioPhone was so much that Reliance Digital reportedly received over 6 million bookings for the JioPhone on the first day itself.
A specific delivery date for the JioPhone hasn’t been given but industry sources suggest September 21, which also marks the beginning of Navratri in India. Reliance Jio appears to have received more demand than expected. However, at the unveiling event of the JioPhone, Mukesh Ambani had said that the company will deliver 5 million units per week. The company’s wider plan includes selling 100 million units in its first year and a 100 million more in the following year.
Reliance Jio is yet to re-open the pre-bookings for the JioPhone, although people can still register for updates. As for the commencement of the pre-bookings, some retailers suggest next week while others expect it to be delayed till the end of September. On pre-booking the JioPhone, an amount of Rs 500 needs to be paid, after which Rs 1,000 should be paid at the time of delivery. The total amount of Rs 1,500 will be refunded after three years upon returning the JioPhone, making the device “effectively free”.

Xiaomi Mi A1 likely to launch in India tomorrow; source code reveals

September 04, 2017 0

Xiaomi's first ever dual-camera smartphone in India spotted in Flipkart listing's source code.

xiaomi-mi-a1
Xiaomi has been teasing its first-ever dual-camera smartphone for the Indian market. While the name of the upcoming smartphone is yet unknown, it could very well be called the Mi A1. The alleged name of the smartphone has been spotted in the source code of Flipkart’s teaser page. Xiaomi’s launch event is set to kick off at 12:00 PM and the proceedings will be live streamed online.
The source code clearly shows that the smartphone being teased will be called the Mi A1, GSMArena reports. Xiaomi first dropped its hat in dual-camera space earlier this year with the premium Mi 6 smartphone. Later, the company introduced a mid-range Mi 5X with similar camera configuration. Both Mi 6 and Mi 5X come with a pair of 12-megapixel standard and telephoto lenses. If rumors are anything to go by, the Mi A1 could just be the global version of Mi 5X.

The Mi A1 is said to be powered by the 2.02GHz octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC aided by 4GB of RAM. Additionally, the smartphone will run on Android 7.1.2 Nougat based with MIUI OS on top. Some reports also claim that the device could run on stock Android OS. More details on the smartphone are expected to clear tomorrow at the official launch.

Apple iPhone 8 storage variant and price leaked, may not be launched on September 12: Report

September 04, 2017 0

Apple might not be able to unveil the OLED iPhone 8 anytime before November.

apple-iphone-8-dummy-model
Apple‘s anniversary iPhone is one of the most-awaited smartphone launch this year. The company is expected to go official with the 2017 iPhones on September 12 at the newly constructed Steve Jobs Theater in Apple ‘spaceship’ park. However, that is not keeping rumor mills from churning out leaks. A new leak coming from Venya Geskin now reveals the storage variant and the pricing of the iPhone 8.
According to Geskin citing sources inside the company, the iPhone 8 will come in three storage variants -64GB, 256GB, and 512GB. In lines with previous reports of OLED iPhone 8 being the expensive iPhones ever, the three variants are said to be priced at $1,000 (approximately Rs 65,000), $1,100 (Rs 71,000) and $1,200 (Rs 77,000), respectively.
Going by the words of tipster Evan Blass, Apple will take pre-orders from the 2017 iPhones from September 15 and will release the flagship smartphone in the market on September 22.
But if suppliers from Korea and sentiment emerging from there are something to go by, then the OLED iPhone 8 entered production in late August, making it a reality only by November. With earlier reports also suggesting that Apple faced design challenges till last minutes of iPhone 8 going in production, it is speculated the Apple will be putting up only a limited number of iPhone 8 units on sale.  “Even if the OLED iPhone is launched in September, it will be available in an extremely limited quantity,” an insider told The Investor.
So far, Apple iPhone 8 is expected to come with OLED display panels while it is also believed to come with a number of upgrades. Reports attribute the high price point to the end-to-end stretched display that has been seen in sketchy images leaked till now. Also the production cost is expected to go up because of the in-display fingerprint scanner expected on the smartphone. However, that is yet not confirmed as other reports have hinted at an enlarged power key to house the Touch ID. Alongside, the 10th anniversary iPhone the company is also expected to unveil the successors to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

ARCore vs ARKit: How Does Google’s AR Platform Compare To That Of Apple’s?

September 02, 2017 0
Apple unveiled its augmented reality platform, ARKit, at its WWDC developers’ conference in June. The platform allows developers to create apps that can take advantage of the built-in camera, processors and motion sensors of iPhones and iPad to create advanced AR experiences. While the Cupertino-based tech giant is taking its very first steps into the world of virtual reality with ARKit, Google has been at it for years, as is already evident from its various trysts with VR and AR, including Cardboard, Daydream and of course, Project Tango. However, the search giant has now gone ahead and unveiled a whole new AR platform of its own, called ARCore, which will allow developers to write AR apps that will integrate digital experiences into the physical world via Android smartphones and tablets. So, now that both Google and Apple have their own publicly-announced AR platforms, let’s pit ARCore vs ARKit and look at some of the key similarities and differences between the two.

What is Google’s ARCore?

ARCore is Google’s all-new SDK that aims to bring augmented reality capabilities to all smartphones running Android 7.0 Nougat and above. Much like Project Tango, the technology will work by detecting physical objects near the user to display augmented reality content. For this, ARCore will make use of the sensors in your smartphone to detect these horizontal planes, factor in the device’s motion tracking and, estimate the light entering a room so objects can be dynamically lit based on their environment.
Google is also bringing its AR experiments to the web, describing it as “a critical component of the future of AR.” As a first step, it’s releasing a prototype web-browser that will allow web developers to start working with AR, much like their mobile counterparts. While the entire process is still in an experimental stage, Google believes that these custom browsers will allow developers to eventually build AR-enhanced websites that are platform neutral and, work on both Android and ARCore, as well as iOS and ARKit.

What is Apple’s ARKit?

Much like Google’s ARCore, ARKit is Apple’s very own foray into the world of augmented reality and was announced at the WWDC developer conference earlier this year. It is expected to come to all iPhones and iPads running on iOS 11 and above, and has been described by industry insiders like former Samsung executive Matthew Miesnieks, as “the biggest thing that’s happened to the AR industry since it began”.
According to post on Apple’s official website, its first augmented reality software development kit offers developers the chance to “easily create unparalleled augmented reality experiences for iPhone and iPad by blending digital objects and information with the environment around users”.

ARCore vs ARKit: Hardware and Software Requirements

ARCore was only announced a few hours earlier, but from the looks of it, it will work pretty much the same way as ARKit for the most part. Like ARKit, ARCore will also work with Java/OpenGL, Unity and Unreal and features motion tracking, environmental understanding and light estimation. Another Area of Similarity between the two platforms is that unlike Tango, both will work on many of the existing smartphones, and will not require any advanced hardware, like specialized sensors or cameras, to work properly.
In terms of software, though, there are some entry barriers if you’re looking to get access to either of the latest AR platforms on your devices. While ARKit will only be compatible with iPhones and iPads running iOS 11 and above, ARCore will be available for devices running on Android 7.0 Nougat and above. So as long as your smartphone runs on the latest software, you should be able to download the latest AR apps from the Play Store and the App Store.

What does ARCore Mean For Project Tango?

While specific details about Google’s ARCore is still hard to come by, it will be interesting to see whether the search giant is looking to kill off Project Tango with its latest announcement, of if it will still have some place in the Google’s grand AR vision going forward. By the looks of it though, this might well be the end of the road for Tango, with Google’s head of augmented reality and virtual reality, Clay Bavor, saying that Tango will “fade into the background” in the future, as more of an “enabling technology that kind of works behind the scenes”.

ARCore vs ARKit: SDK Availability and Compatible Devices

The SDK for ARKit is available for download for all iOS developers with an Apple Developer Account, and works on devices running iOS 11 beta. It will eventually support all devices running iOS 11 and above.
As for ARCore, Google has already released a preview SDK to Android developers, but only for Google’s Pixel twins and Samsung’s Galaxy S8 running either Android Nougat or Android Oreo. The SDK, however, will eventually support all devices running Android 7.0 Nougat and above.

ARCore vs ARKit: When To Expect AR Apps Based on These Platforms?

Google says it will support 100 million devices by the end of this year, but as we know all too well, which devices will get Nougat and which devices won’t will depend entirely on the OEMs and carriers, so as long as you device is in line to receive either of the newer versions of Android, you should be able to use the AR apps that are expected to start showing up on the Play Store going forward. It will be interesting to see if the Nougat/Oreo update actually rolls out before the end of the year, or if we’ll have to wait until 2018 to get the update on our devices.
As for AR apps based on these SDKs, both Google and Apple have demoed several AR applications on their respective platforms, but when we start getting these apps on our smartphones is anybody’s guess. However, if speculations on various forums are anything to go by, we should start seeing the first set of apps based on these platforms by the end of this year if everything goes according to plan.

How to Get Google ARCore on Any Android Device

September 02, 2017 0
To up the ante in augmented reality (AR), Google recently announced ARCore. It is developed from the same fundamental technologies as Tango’s and is a direct take on Apple’s ARKit. Although it does promise some advancements in the field of AR by letting you view AR props just by using your smartphone, it is currently compatible only with Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S8. But, thankfully, with the help of Thomas Suarez (“tomthecarrot”), a developer in the Android community, it is now possible to run ARCore on unsupported devices as well. If you are wondering how to do that, here is how you can get ARCore on any Android device:
Note: I successfully tried this method on my OnePlus 5 running Android 7.1.1. as well as my Samsung Galaxy S8+ running Android 7.0.

Get ARCore on Any Android Device

This method requires installing an ARCore Service APK which has been modified to work with non-compatible devices. Now, to use this, follow the steps below:
  • Download and install the modded ARCore Service APK on your device.
  • After this, download and install the APK of Hello AR – an app based on ARCore – on the same device.
Installing APKs

How to Use ARCore?

Once both the aforementioned APKs are installed, the next (and the obvious) step is to launch the Hello AR app. When you open it, you will find that it is a clutter-free app that only has the camera interface. If you point it toward a plain surface, it will recognize it, and then you can tap on the screen to add AR props (currently Bugdroids). You will also notice that, once you add a prop, they will always appear at the same location. And, irrespective of whether you move the camera or not, they will stay there until you re-open the app.
I also tried this method on my Moto G3 and Nexus 5X, but, sadly, the app crashed on them every time. Given that it is only a preview version of ARCore, I would like to give it the benefit of the doubt. Regardless of this, if you happen to own a flagship device from either this year or last year, the method should work successfully for you.
