Nokia 8: ‘Bothie’ ???

What is the dual-camera deal?

A dual-camera module on a smartphone intends to deliver DSLR-like effects to images, making them richer in color, or achieve Bokeh. While the concept is not new, the trend peaked with the Apple iPhone 7 Plus thanks to its Portrait Mode. The trend has continued through the OnePlus 5 and more recently, the Honor 8 Pro.

Coming to the Nokia 8; it features a dual-camera module at the back which comprises of a pair of 13-megapixel Carl ZEISS sensors. One of the sensors is a primary RGB color sensor, while the other is a monochrome sensor. Similar to the Huawei P9, these two sensors work together to capture the same subject in color and monochrome, and then stitch it together to achieve a richer final image. The color sensor comes with optical image stabilization, PDAF and aperture f/2.0.

The unusual moniker refers to the ability with which you can leverage the front and back camera on the Nokia 8 for live streaming. On the front of the smartphone is a 13-megapixel camera for selfies and video-calling. For Bothie, the Dual Sight mode comes into play. It essentially allows you to stream from both the front and rear cameras at the same time. So for example, if you are doing a Facebook or YouTube live from an event, the feature will split the screen into two so that you can interact with your audience, while also allowing them to witness your surroundings simultaneously.

To stream a Bothie, you don’t need to use any additional app as the feature is built-in the main camera app itself. You simply need to tap on the Dual Sight mode next to the hamburger menu on the top. There is an option to stream to Facebook or YouTube right from the native app. So, you can switch to the mode and start streaming instantly. However, as early reviewers point out, you won’t be able to use the Dual Sight mode if you shoot the live video from the main Facebook or YouTube app.
