The latest iteration of Google’s popular Android software is set to be revealed today. Coinciding with America’s total solar eclipse, the eighth version of the Android OS, known by far as Android O, will finally get a name and evidently bring onboard a host of improvements and features. Google is hosting a special event for Android O reveal in New York City on August 21, starting at 2:40 PM ET (12:10 AM IST). Whether Oreo or Octopus, before Android O goes into official mode, here is a look at the top features unearthed over beta.

Redesigned interface

You’re in for a special treat as you move to Android 8.0 as Google is finally redesigning the app icons. From rounded, square-shaped icons, you will be able to switch to cylindrical-shaped icons thanks to the new adaptive interface. Google has added further customization allowing you to add animated actions specific to each app.
In addition to the app icons, the settings menu also dons a new look. In the battery section, you will now see a large battery icons with the estimated power remaining indicator. There have been reports about Android O feature that will enable users to check the battery levels of Bluetooth devices paired to their smartphone. In the new update, the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings are clubbed under a single Network settings label.

Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Mode

Android O is said to be focused on fluid experiences and at its core is multitasking. With the new OS version, you will be able to work on two apps simultaneously. For example, you may choose to compose a message while watching a video at the same time. The new mode is expected to support all types of display sizes.

Notification Dots

Taking cue from Apple’s iOS, the Android O will get notification alerts in the form of app badges. However, instead of the number of messages or missed alerts for a specific app, it will only show a notification dot. You can press and hold on the app icon to view the notification, and also swipe to dismiss it.

Long Press App Shortcut

Another feature inspired by Apple’s 3D Touch, Android O will let add app widgets by long pressing and holding on the app icon. Currently, you have the quick app shortcut feature enabled since Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

New Emojis

With Android O, your communications using emojis is set to get further enhanced thanks to the addition of new set of emojis. These new emojis have been redesigned and give a very iOS-like feel, with rounded faces instead of blob faces. Some of the new emojis include mermaid, fairy, wizard and giraffe.

App Usage Limits

The new update will also enhance battery as it will allow you to limit the amount of data and battery background apps consume. Similar to iOS, you will be able to disable features such as location updates and background services to ensure better performance.

Smart Text Selection

Android O will make it easier for you to dial a phone number right from the message, or copy an email address. Once you select the number you have received in a message, you will get the regular option of copy, paste, or select all, but there will also be a phone icon to make it easier to call directly from the message. The feature works for email addresses and locations as well, leading you to compose mail or maps, instantly.
