iPhone X: Apple fires employee after daughter’s hands-on video goes viral

October 29, 2017 0

Kids can be troublesome.

Apple-iPhone-X-leaked-video
Apple is known for its super strict policies when it comes to its unreleased products, and exactly how the details about them are put out to the public. These policies apply to Apple employees, but if the latest instance is to be believed, then also to their kids.
When an Apple employee’s daughter, Brooke Amelia Peterson, visited her father at the Apple campus, little did she know that her seemingly innocent hands-on video of the yet-to-be-shipped iPhone X will be picked up by major tech websites, and also get her father a termination letter from the company.
Peterson published a video earlier this week in which she showcased the iPhone X in all its glory. Evidently, the video went viral, bringing the attention of Apple authorities to what the teenager did. At the time of writing, the video has 309,992 views on YouTube through an unofficial channel, and there are other channels too which have picked up the video. In the video, the father is also seen showing off the Apple campus to his daughter, along with giving a peek into how Apple Pay works on the iPhone X.
What particularly stands as a violation of Apple’s policies is that the footage not only revealed the unreleased device, but it contained special employee-only QR codes. A Notes app, which appeared to include codenames of unreleased Apple products, was also shown in the video. It is worth noting that filming on Apple campus is prohibited, and the bigger violation here is the iPhone X.
According to The Verge, Apple reportedly requested Peterson to remove the video, but it appears that it was too late as the video had already spread. In a separate video, Peterson explains how her father violated an Apple company rule by allowing her to film the unreleased handset at Apple’s campus. She claims her father has been fired as a result of her video. “I had no idea this was a violation,” she says.
The dismissed Apple engineer had worked at the company for around four years, building the iPhone RF and wireless circuit design.

Correct order of cheese in a burger? Google CEO Sundar Pichai to solve emoji puzzle

October 29, 2017 0

Should it be on top of patty or bottom?

Google-Apple-burger-debate
Monday’s approaching, and the most important task on Google CEO Sundar Pichai‘s to-do list is to figure out the correct order of cheese slice in a burger. Should it be on top of the patty, or at the bottom? Pichai will address this extremely crucial aspect related to user preference.
Media analyst Thomas Baekdal pointed out a major difference between how Google and its rival Apple see burgers in the form of their emoji. Google’s burger emoji places the cheese underneath the burger, while Apple puts it on top.
To this, Pichai responded saying he will address this issue on a priority basis on Monday.
Emojis have become the core of digital conversations, and time and again, OS providers update their sets to offer a more diverse set of emoji. Now it is hard to say if these folks are being playful on a weekend or there’s some serious revision happening when it comes to Google’s emoji pack.
When Google launched Android O earlier this year, it finally redesigned its emoji to match up to the universal set. The Android emoji no longer look like blobs. They are more rounded, and standard in appearance. Android emojis for the longest time had been the most out of place when it came to cross-platform sharing. However, after 18 months, Google finally redesigned its Android emoji pack to match those of Apple and Microsoft. Pichai’s response also suggests the company could be looking at standardizing the emoji so that it appears the same across platforms. Talking about the ‘right’ way of placing the cheese slice in a burger, well, some like it on top of the patty, while some like it at the bottom. Others perhaps did not even notice before Pichai announced it as something important. Whether or not you paid attention to how your burger was arranged, Google should help us understand this tomorrow.

Google Chrome for Android now lets you view saved passwords

October 29, 2017 0

The feature is available to the newest version of the Google Chrome app for Android.

google-chrome-android
Google is finally extending Chrome‘s ability to show you saved passwords to its Android platform. The feature had been previously available on the desktop variant of the browser. The latest Chrome 62 for Android has been officially rolled out. The Chrome app will prompt you to install the latest update. In case you do not receive the prompt, you can manually head to app settings and check for the new version.
Similar to how the feature works on desktop, the mobile app will also let you view your saved passwords. Whenever you log in or sign up to a website through Chrome, the browser asks you if you would like it to remember the credentials. On desktop, you can head to passwords.google.com, and view all the websites you have your accounts on and check their passwords.
However, this ability has not been available to mobile users of Chrome prior to this week. Now, on your Android device, you can launch Chrome and head to settings under the menu section, and tap on save passwords. Under this section, you will find all the websites associated with your saved passwords which you can check out by tapping on them, XDA Developers reports. It is to be noted that the saved passwords will be visible only when the ‘save password’ option enabled.
If you tap on view password for any website, the lock screen will first pop up so as to authenticate the identity. For added security, Google has also disabled the option of taking screenshots of passwords.
In case you are not able to find that option in your Chrome app for Android, then you need not worry as the update is a gradual one and would be extended to all users soon.

iPhone-based ultrasound machine can help detect cancer

October 29, 2017 0

The company now plans to combine the instrument with artificial-intelligence software.

iPhone-cancer-detector
A novel iPhone-based portable ultrasound machine that can help detect cancereasily at home has been developed by US researchers.
The device called Butterfly IQ is a scanner of the size of an electric razor that can display black-and-white imagery of the body, when paired with an iPhone.
Developed by Connecticut-based start-up Butterfly Network, the pocket-sized device works by shooting sound into the body and capturing the echoes.
Usually, the sound waves are generated by a vibrating crystal. But Butterfly’s machine instead uses 9,000 tiny drums etched onto a semiconductor chip, reported the MIT Technology Review on Friday.
Earlier this year, John Martin, a US-based vascular surgeon and chief medical officer at Butterfly Network, discovered a cancerous mass in his own throat while testing the device.
Martin felt an uncomfortable feeling of thickness on his throat, thus he oozed out some gel and ran the probe along his neck. On his smartphone, to which the device is connected, black-and-gray images quickly appeared. He found a 3cm mass that was diagnosed as squamous-cell cancer — a form of skin cancer that develops in the cells of the outer layer of the skin.
Instead of vibrating crystals, Butterfly IQ uses “capacitive micro-machined ultrasound transducers”, or CMUTs, tiny ultrasonic emitters layered on a semiconductor chip a little larger than a postage stamp.
“The device gives you the ability to do everything at the bedside: you can pull it out of your pocket and scan the whole body,” Martin said.
The company now plans to combine the instrument with artificial intelligencesoftware that could help a novice position the probe, collect the right images, and interpret them.
By 2018, its software will let users automatically calculate how much blood a heart is pumping, or detect problems like aortic aneurisms, the report said.
The Butterfly IQ is the first solid-state ultrasound machine to reach the market in the US. The company plans to go on sale this year for $1,999-far less than any other model on the market.

Nokia 2 benchmarking leak reveals key specifications, to be HMD Global’s entry-level smartphone

October 29, 2017 0

Nokia 2 is expected to be launching in the coming few days.

Nokia 2 renders
Nokia 2 has been doing the rounds of the rumor mill quite frequently. Now, thanks to the upcoming smartphone’s listing on AnTuTu, we have a fair idea about what would be on offer when HMD Global chooses to officially release the phone.
According to past reports, Nokia 2 is said to be the company’s cheapest smartphone yet. Now, the latest listing on AnTuTu is in line with that. If the listing is to be believed, the Nokia 2 will be equipped with modest hardware, including Snapdragon 212 SoC with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. Given the brand name is associated with catering to all kinds of price categories, this is expected to be a welcome decision.
Nokia-2---AnTuTu
Despite it being an entry-level smartphone, the Nokia 2 will run the newer Android 7.1.1 Nougat, and flaunt a HD (720x1280p pixels) display. For optics, it is likely to bundle an 8-megapixel camera at the back along with a 5-megapixel front camera.
Earlier last week, the smartphone was briefly listed on US retailer B&H website, along with details about its specifications. Based on the listing, Nokia 2 will be a dual-SIM model with a price tag of just $99 (approximately Rs 6,500). There will be two color choices according to the retailer’s listing – black and white.
Nokia 2 previously also showed up in the Bluetooth SIG database. While the AnTuTu listing does not clearly specify, past rumors indicate the phone will be fueled by a massive 4,000mAh battery. For a $99 smartphone, this battery capacity seems impressive.
As a report on GSMArena puts, HMD Global is hosting an event on October 31 in India, where it might possibly launch a new Nokia phone. Again, as there is no official word on which phone the company would be launching on that day, speculations side with the Nokia 7.

Is this the first Microsoft-branded Android phone?

October 28, 2017 0

Yes, Microsoft is planning to sell its own Android phone in its stores for the very first time. The Redmond giant recently unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S8 Microsoft Edition, the news came as a shock to many people, it also started a bunch of speculation about Microsoft-branded Android Phone.
Windows never had a solid foothold on mobile and Microsoft ultimately announced that it will no longer develop Windows Phone features and hardware. Satya Nadella’s vision is to empower every user regardless of the operating system and thus this year, Microsoft unveiled new apps for Android and iOS devices, including the Edge web browser.
From Microsoft Edge to Office apps, today the Play Store has all the apps you will find on the Windows Store. There is only one thing missing: Microsoft-branded Android phone and it appears to be coming sooner than speculated.
Yesterday, the Redmond giant announced tools for Microsoft Teams awareness program. In the blog post, Microsoft has shared an image ‘Bringing you a chat-based workspace’ where the company has included images of Surface devices and an Android phone. The phone has Microsoft logo and it runs Android operating system.

Ola compensates upset customer with samosa, apology card at doorstep

October 28, 2017 0

Humor helps in getting a customer a samosa cashback.

Ola-compensation
Cab cancellations are fairly common these days with the demands surging like never before. If the waiting time is too much, you cancel, in other cases, the driver cancels the ride. But in this process, one thing common is the cancellation fee that is charged. When Gurgaon-based Abhishek Asthana was charged a cancellation fee because an Ola driver canceled the ride, little did he know that the company would resort to a creative way of making up to him.
Asthana, who goes by a popular Twitter handle @GabbarSingh, aired his Ola woes through a tweet when the ride he booked for himself, and his brother to the airport was canceled from the driver’s end. He posted about the incident with a hilarious analogy of asking for a samosa, not getting it, but still being charged for it.
Asthana, known for his humorous tweets on the social media, saw his complaint tweet getting escalating pretty soon. To this, Ola was prompt to apologize and reverse the charges. But what came as a surprise was Ola sending Asthana two samosas, along with an apology card to his house to make amends.

App launched for people to click selfie with ‘gomata’

October 28, 2017 0

Goseva Parivar has launched a dedicated app for users to enter the selfie with cow contest.

Selfie-with-gomata-app
Cows are considered holy in some cultures. In others, perhaps edible. In a bid to spread the knowledge and benefits of cows, Goseva Parivar – an NGO dedicated to the well-being of cows in India, has launched a new app to help you enter their contest about clicking a selfie with a cow.
“When we held the contest last time in 2015, entries had to be sent by WhatsApp, which created some inconvenience for the participants and us. So, this time, with the Goseva Parivar mobile app, it will be easier for us to receive and select entries for the contest,” Lalit Agarwal, head of Goseva Parivar, told The Hindu. The app has been built with the aim of spreading the organization’s vision of ‘serving mother cow by serving humanity’.
The Goseva Parivar is backed by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). A senior RSS leader is quoted as saying, “Even though we are not directly involved with the contest, we ideologically support and appreciate it.”
If you are an Android user, you can install the app and participate in the ‘Selfie with Gomata’ contest, which runs from October 16 until December 31, 2017. The organizers have categorized the competition in three parameters – Selfie, Selfie with Family, and Selfie with Friends. You can participate in each of the categories by posting pictures accordingly. So a solo selfie with the cow could be put in the first category, if you are posing with your family or friends, then the pictures will be judged accordingly.
There are prizes to be won across categories. The results will be declared on January 21, 2018 at an event of Goseva Parivar in Swabhumi. One must take into account that the creative selfies need must be with only Desi cows or Indian breeds.

Samsung working on all-new foldable device, latest patent hints

October 28, 2017 0

The new patent suggests a foldable design which could incorporate bends at multiple locations on the frame.

Samsung-foldable-phone-patent-2
Just a day after reports emerged about Microsoft looking at resurrecting its Courier hardware as a full-fledged foldable note-taking device, rival Samsung is also making news for its latest patent which hints at an all-new folding concept smartphone.
Samsung is already known for building flexible displays, however, those have been limited to TVs and curved edge phones. The new patent suggests that it will be possible for the company to build a bendable phone that could be a true successor to the ‘spilling edges’ trend.
The patent application, filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office, includes sketches of what is called as a ‘flexible electronic device’. The purported device is described as one having two rigid housings paired with a multi-joint hinge in the middle. The device would close with a magnetic force with the screen facing inwards, akin to what could be a full-screen flip phone, ZDNet reports.
Now, the caveat with a hinge design is that there are ‘teeth’ on the rear side of the phone, which becomes prone to dirt and other objects falling inside. What Samsung is aiming at is a flat surface which improves upon aesthetics as well as functionality. The idea is to retain the flexibility of the display as well as foldability of the device. The sketches suggest that the fold is placed in the middle of the device. But Samsung says that the bend could be placed anywhere on the frame, even at multiple locations. Such a concept, if applied to televisions, could mean a future device which could be folded multiple times to be converted into even a pocketable entity.
Samsung says the concept design could be applied to any electronic device which uses hinge as part of its functionality. Now, this could include a phone, a head-mounted display, vacuum cleaner, and also medical devices. Essentially, the company is looking at applications of the patent beyond the smartphone segment.
Although the concept design opens up the floodgates for innovation across product categories, it is hard for developers to overcome component challenges as not all elements can be produced in a flexible or foldable format. If indeed a successful hardware is readied for production, scaling issues are certain to crop up.
Meanwhile, Samsung is looking at launching a foldable Galaxy Note phone in the coming year. However, a wider release and mass production will only happen when it is truly ready for the market.
