Where’s my Android? A Google Pixel 2 XL without any operating system just got delivered

November 02, 2017 0

So you buy a new phone and the company forgets to give install an operating system on it, what do you?

google pixel 2 xl front hands on
The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL started shipping two days ago, and people around the world have started receiving their deliveries. One of these (un)lucky people is a Reddit user who goes by the name ‘MAKES_PEOPE_MAD’, and he just received his brand new Google Pixel 2XL smartphone. All’s great and everything, just that Google forgot to load any operating system on the device.
The Reddit user started a thread on the forum along with an image of his new smartphone showing an error that reads, “Can’t find valid operating system. The device will not start.” However, the internet has come to his rescue (with their sarcasm), and have the best suggestions ever. While user Echojhawke suggested him to switch the phone off and on again, that_90s_guy showed his foresightedness by suggesting him to “download more RAM when you’re at it”.
This thread did take a little turn, but it is definitely word reading. Check out the screenshot below:
google-pixel-2xl-reddit
Back to the mystery of missing operating system. We checked up the link that the error message shows, and we were taken to Nexus’ Help Forum. According to the forum, there are three kinds of warnings about operating system safety, and unfortunately this one falls under neither of them.
google-pixel-2xl-imgur
The three category the forum mentions are: One, a case where a device has loaded a different operating system, wherein they will see a yellow caution mark on their device. Second, when it is in an “unlocked” state. This means that your operating system can’t be checked to make sure that it’s safe to use. And this warning is represented by an orange caution mark.
The third, is a red caution mark, which the case in question has too, but this is supposed to show up the warning “Your device is corrupt. It can’t be trusted and may not work properly.” Basically, for when a device has been changed or corrupted and is not safe to use. The device may not work properly and could expose user data to corruption and security risks.
While this warning doesn’t read any of the ones mentioned on the forum, going by the color schemes of the warnings, the device received by the Reddit user seems to have been corrupted. BGR India has gotten in touch with Google regarding the incidence, but an official response is awaited.

vivo v7 plus review main
Remember Samsung’s ‘Never Mind’ offer, launched two months ago? Vivo is now rolling out a similar offer, called FullView Forever offer, which is essentially a one-time screen replacement offer for Rs 990. While Samsung covered a bunch of smartphones under its offer, Vivo’s smartphone is exclusively for its flagship Vivo V7+.
The catch, you ask? The offer is valid only if a Vivo V7+ is bought and activated between the period of November 1 to December 31, 2017. Also, the offer can be availed starting from the seventh day after the Vivo V7+ is activated until a period of 12 months. In case the smartphone is purchased but not activated within the offer period, it won’t be applicable for the offer. Under terms and conditions, Vivo has stated that the offer shall not be applicable on demo units and bulk sales. Also, the smartphone’s screen will not be replaced if it’s scratched, or damaged due to liquid.
The ‘FullView Forever’ offer is applicable pan India and users can repair their smartphone’s damaged or broken screen at all authorized Vivo service centers, with just a payment of Rs 990. However, as the name suggests, this is only applicable once, and cannot be availed after that. Also, all damages may not be covered under the offer; company’s service centre technicians will check and decide if the damaged smartphone falls under the terms of the offer.
Vivo’s V7+ is the company’s first smartphone to feature a FullView 18:9 display. The smartphone flaunts a 5.99-inch HD (1440×720 pixels) IPS display with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Microsoft’s latest patent aims to save the 3.5mm headphone jack

November 02, 2017 0
Microsoft patent headphone jack
Smartphone technology is evolving at a rapid pace by bringing new innovations to the table and removing some at the same time. Last year Apple caught immense attention as it removed the 3.5mm audio jack from the iPhone 7-series. Although Apple received heavy backlash for doing so, many smartphone brands followed suit. Now a new patent filed by Microsoft appears to solve the problem of retaining the audio jack without affecting the design.
It has been argued that the removal of the audio helps OEMs keep the smartphone build slim. It also makes way for other components to take more space such as battery, larger displays and more. There are also others who argue that this is a tactic for brands to promote wireless headphones. First reported by MSPowerUser, Microsoft has filed a patent is titled “Plug receptacle for an electronic device”.
Microsoft patent
According to the patent filed, the design language would be such that the headphone jack would be an expandable one. Also, it will only be pulled or stretched out when someone needs it. Otherwise, the smartphone’s design will remain the same and may even give the illusion of no headphone jack at all.
Microsoft further details how this would work. It says, “A plug receptacle is disclosed, comprising a receptacle housing having a passage configured to receive at least a part of a plug of a plug connector, a front side having a first opening and a top side having a second, elongated opening that intersects the first opening, the passage opening to the front side via the first opening and to the top side via the second opening.”
It also says that that the plug receptacle will come with a cover which can be pulled in and out. There are three proposed designs for this headphone jack. In one there would be a flexible material that will expand when the headphone is plugged in. There would also be a hard pleated material which would expand in the same way. As for the last design, it is said that the plug receptacle will expand in both directions. Considering this is only a patent, the production may or may not take place. However, it does sound interesting for an alternative to saving the headphone jack.

The launch event will be broadcast and you can follow this link to catch the action live. Soon after, Xiaomi India tweeted more hints about the upcoming phone. The company wrote, “I’m not a Note. I’m not a Book. I’m a new series.” Now this nullifies past rumors about Mi Note 3 being the device in question.
Xiaomi is one of the top five vendors in India, and together with Samsung, it forms almost 50 percent of the smartphone market. Other brands in the top spot include Oppo and Vivo, both of which are focused on their camera capabilities.
The company recently announced that it has shipped 10 million smartphones in a month for the second time in a row. The announcement was made by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun in a video post on Chinese social networking site Weibo. In India, the company recorded 4 million smartphones sales during the festive season.
