The JioPhone had recorded 6 million bookings in a day.
The much-awaited JioPhone, which went on sale earlier this month, might finally be reaching its customers. Reports suggest that Reliance is readying deliveries of the device around the nine-day festive period (navratri) which begins on September 20.
The delivery for Reliance JioPhone will commence in the last week of this month. If you’ve pre-booked the JioPhone you will receive an SMS alert to collect your device from your nearest Reliance Jio store.
Once the deliveries begin, customers can also check their order status on the MyJio app under the ‘Manage Booking’ tab. Once they enter their registered phone number, a delivery date for their order would be visible. They can also call on a toll-free number (1800-890-8900) from the registered mobile number to know the status of the order. Reliance Jio had received six million bookings in a day, and the excessive demand had compelled the telco to shut down orders. However, bookings could be reopened during the festive season after the first batch of phones is delivered.
Further to the six million single-day bookings, 10 million people had expressed interest in purchasing the JioPhone, sources revealed. Reliance will notify those about the next date of availability.
To buy a JioPhone, a customer has to pay Rs 1,500, which is fully refundable after a period of three years, once the JioPhone is returned to the company. The JioPhone runs on KaiOS and is pre-loaded with Jio apps. In addition, it includes 4GB of expandable internal storage, a 2-megapixel rear camera, NFC support, and a 2,000mAh battery. Those are attractive specs in what is essentially a feature phone.
Reliance, of course, hasn’t revealed the demographic that has bought the JioPhone. But analysts reckon that most customers would be from semi-rural and rural markets areas that are predominantly feature-phone markets still. Consumers here upgrade from one feature phone to the other and the smartphone revolution has nearly eluded them. As a result, a phone that offers them entertainment apps, 4G data and free voice calling, and comes cheaper than most regular feature phones, is highly attractive. That probably explains the six million single-day bookings!
