The new desktop CPUs have more cores than their predecessors.
After unveiling the 8th generation Intel Core i7, i5 and i3 desktop CPUs late last month, they are now available to purchase. Carrying the code name ‘Coffee Lake,’ there are six new models to choose from – two each in the Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 family. Aimed at gamers and content creators, the new CPUs are built on 14nm++ architecture.
The Core i7-8700K is the top end CPU, where ‘K’ is built for those who demand premium performance with maximum tuning flexibility. Clocked at 3.7GHz, it comes with turbo boost frequency of 4.7GHz, which is the highest ever for any desktop processor from Intel. The other is Core i7-8700 CPU, which is clocked at 3.2GHz, whereas the turbo boost frequency goes all the way up to 4.6GHz. Both CPUs feature six cores and twelve threads, up from four cores and eight threads compared to the previous generation.
When Intel unveiled the CPUs last month, it did throw in some performance numbers. The company mentioned that the new Core i7 CPUs are capable of delivering 25 percent more powerful and fluid performance compared to the previous generation. Gamers can also stream and record up to two times faster with the new CPUs, compared to a 3-year-old machine. And for content creators, the new CPUs can allow them to edit 4K 360-degree videos up to 65 times faster than a 3-year-old machine.
Next is the Core i5-8600K CPU with base frequency of 3.6GHz and turbo boost frequency of 4.3GHz. The other CPU in the family, the Core i5-8400, runs at base frequency of 2.8GHz, and turbo boost frequency of 4GHz. Both CPUs feature six cores and six threads. Lastly, the Core i3 CPUs come with four cores and four threads, run at constant clock speed, and do not feature any turbo boost frequency. The Core i3-8350K is clocked at 4GHz, whereas the Core i3-8100 is clocked at 3.6GHz.
While Intel has not announced the Indian pricing yet, the lower end Core i3 model in the US starts at $117 (approximately Rs 7,600), whereas the top-end Core i7 model is priced at $359 (roughly Rs 23,700), plus taxes.
