After months of leaks, the anniversary edition iPhone X is official. The smartphone will launch in India on November 3, with the 64GB variant priced at Rs 89,000, and the 256GB storage variant priced at Rs 102,000. The iPhone Xcomes with a refreshing new front and back glass design, an all screen display, wireless charging dual cameras, and more.
To make space for the all-screen display, Apple got rid of the home button, which also incorporated the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Early rumors hinted that the iPhone X will feature an under-display fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication. However, as the technology is not ready yet, Apple had to ditch fingerprint scanning, and replace it with Face ID instead. Face ID is Apple’s new secure authentication feature that will not only unlock your smartphone, but also help you make cashless payments. Let’s take a closer look at how the technology works.

Apple has integrated a dedicated TrueDepth camera for Face ID system. The setup includes a dot projector, which projects and analyzes more than 30,000 invisible dots for creating a depth map of your face, and an infrared camera to read the dotted pattern. There is also a flood illuminator that helps the infrared light identify your face, even in the dark.

Essentially, the camera takes a 3D scan of your face from all angles. This 3D scan of your face is securely saved inside the smartphone’s enclave hardware chip. When you want to unlock your iPhone X, this 3D map is compared and once it matches, the authentication is successful.

Apple also highlighted the prowess of the A11 Bionic chip, which uses machine learning to recognize the changes in your appearance. So, whether you grow a beard, wear glasses or a hat, the Face ID on the iPhone X will recognize you, and unlock the smartphone. Well, the technology does sound good, but if you saw the keynote, the Face ID demonstration failed in first attempt. This could be because the feature may need some fine tuning. And will the iPhone X going on sale in November.
